The musical “Natalka Poltavka” by Rostyslav Derzhypilskyi and Nazariy Paniv!
For our theatre, as well as for Ukrainian theatre in general, “Natalka Poltavka” is a landmark work. Our version is a new reading of the first dramatic work of modern Ukrainian literature. In the 205 years since its first performance, all the characters in the play have become archetypal, we quote passages from Poltavka, and Lysenko’s music is magnificent. Because the myth-infused play created by Ivan Kotliarevsky about Ukrainians and for Ukrainians is ‘sewn’ in each of us.
Our production reinterprets the familiar story through an unconventional approach to the location and a completely unexpected interpretation of the key characters. All the events of the play unfold in the context of the theatre environment, where each character personifies his or her role not only in the plot of the play, but also in the theatrical process. The author himself, through the mouth of Peter, tells us what the theatre is: ‘It’s such a miracle – once you see it, you want to see it again.’
“Natalka Poltavka” is a work that preserves the spirit of Ukrainian culture. Mykola Lysenko’s music, based on the play by Ivan Kotlyarevsky, combines the dramatic depth of literature with a majestic musical tradition.
