Utopian comedy “The Kaidash family”.
A cult work of Ukrainian literature, The Kaidashev Family is about an ideal world that fascinates. The world we almost lost. A world that we have no right to lose.
After the heyday of the Mazepa Baroque, the powerful, rich, luxuriously baroque Mazepa Ukraine turned into a province of the Russian Empire called Malorossia. Entire generations of Ukrainians were imbued with postcolonial thinking.
Rostyslav Derzhypilsky and his star-studded cast in his utopian comedy based on Nechuy-Levytsky’s novel The Kaidashev Family offer an artistic concept of the timeless existence of characters – carriers of Ukrainian identity – who act in a space built on the principle of a nativity scene, where there is hell, earth and heaven.
Along with subtle humour and lightheartedness, we will focus on historical traumas in order to overcome them together.
The head of the Kaidash family, played by Oleksiy Hnatkovsky, is a carrier of the Ukrainian code who has not succumbed to spiritual enslavement and resisted degradation. Irma Vitovska’s Kaidashikha is a woman with a unique set of traits that will take the viewer from super-comedy scenes to tragedy and back again to give absolute pleasure.
“The Kaidash Family” is about the rebirth of the lost, about our Ukrainian family, about our flaws and our uniqueness, about the path from discord to understanding and prosperity.
